Want to dive deeper into Hoodoo? Instructor Rev. Dr. Aaron Davis returns for Part II of Advanced Rootwork in his Rootwork series. In Part 2, the course continues a deep dive into rootwork workings and subject areas, with a decidedly baneful turn as you learn how to execute and fight against negative workings. Because some people may take the modules out of numerical order, the first two weeks from Module One are included in Module Two. This way you have the prerequisite material to practice these eight weeks.
Completion of part one and part two of this sixteen-week course will give you all of the key tools and knowledge from which to build your own unique approach to Hoodoo. You will then have the option of practicing rootwork for yourself and your immediate loved ones, or to become a professional rootworker. The community we began in “Working the Roots” will be your collegial community of practitioners, in addition to any community you cultivate where you live.

The ability to adapt and resist oppression is the core impulse of this spiritual practice. This is perhaps the most important reason to practice rootwork; namely, because you need a flexible and highly-adaptable tradition that provides useful, time-tested tools to navigate life’s travails and challenges with greater ease. By the end of this class, you will have a firm grasp on what Hoodoo is, as well as how to apply it meaningfully to your existing practice.
As other teachers in the Blackthorne School have said, Hoodoo is probably not your only spiritual modality. We are all grown folk and able to discern how to incorporate Hoodoo into what we already do. That said, the class discussion forums are just the place for us to discuss and work out collectively where this may not be so clear, which sets us apart from other more individualistic Western traditions. Here in our Facebook forums, we can draw upon this community to find our way.

The Reverend Dr. Aaron Davis is a native son of Albany, New York. He has been supporting the Christian ministry since 1996, and it was also during this time that he recognized the call from his ancestors growing louder.
This led to discovering his ancestral home in the African-derived tradition of Lucumi and related practice of Espiritismo. These traditions established the ancestral connection and also taught a healthy reverence for all the forces of nature known as Orisha for The Reverend Dr. Aaron Davis. Life took on a new meaning, as he learned about his ancestors and spiritual birthright. Hoodoo is in his blood. For over 17 years, Aaron has found joyful fulfillment in working the roots while helping others.
By prayer, laying on of hands, and calling the Holy Spirit, The Reverend Dr. Aaron Davis was made Bishop of The Renewal Church (TRC). During consecration, he recognized the Cyprianic spirit in the lineage of Cyprian of Antioch was omnipresent.
He is also a passionate student of the Solomonic and Greek Magical Papryi traditions.

Dirts and powders are some of the oldest and most African parts of rootwork. Dirt, in particular, gets at one of the core principles of Congo cosmology – namely that the materia used to conjure spirits is so important because certain conjuration tools represent a microcosm of our world, or the entire universe.
This week’s magic is something I tend to use the least in my rootwork practice. I think that’s for two reasons. One is that I grew up with a certain degree of persistent guilt and manipulation targeted against me by my family of origin dynamics that I tend to detest those things being aimed at me as an adult. The other, bigger reason stems from clients I have read and worked for. People occasionally come to me who are unhappy with their relationships. They often want some kind of work to dominate their partner – or make that person only have eyes for them.
The hard truth is, if they don’t already have eyes for only you, they never will.
We are heading into increasingly baneful territory as these weeks progress! Being in this class, you are advanced workers/students, but it is very important to never lose sight of the basics. Much like how in healthcare (especially during Covid-19 time) we are taught to always assume Universal Precautions – meaning that we assume everywhere around us is the potential for infection or disease, and we thus take the precaution of hand-washing and utilizing Personal Protective Equipment all the time. Likewise, when handling baneful things, herbs, or even just doing the workings, we need to observe the common sense “Universal Precautions” of rootwork practice.
This week is a survey and unveiling of the most destructive form of magic within Hoodoo. My historical read and study has shown that this was used for the most extreme situations, mainly because this magic is irreversible once unleashed. As I have said all along, however, Hoodoo was forged in the fires of American Slavery. Like one of the geniuses of African American people is to transmute negative things into a positive – making a way out of no way – traditional rootworkers embraced the brutality of their world as a catalyst for resistance and, in some cases, turned that brutality back upon the slaveowners, slave-catchers and anyone else against the Black community. African spiritualties always recognize power and use it for the elevation of the common good.
This week you will learn some of what I know about this kind of work. It is a broad and deep subject area. The point of the Lesson is to expose you to sample workings and approaches, then you build upon them for your own practice.
Dolls are an interesting facet of Hoodoo. On one hand, in Western cultures a lot of ignorance abounds about the “voodoo doll” effigy – as if European and Euro-American cultures don’t use dolls in spiritual or baneful ways.
The magic in this lesson is to give you a survey of what is possible to do around these conditions of life that make life worth living. The things I am teaching are really strong medicine that in most cases should only be used for dire situations.
We began to explore graveyard work in the “Working the Roots” class, where we addressed protocols of entering and exiting, graveyard dirts, a survey of graveyard spirits and a few other issues. Now, in this Lesson, we are going far deeper and rounding out the arcana of this
rootwork system with a fourth, final spirit: the Guardian Spirit of the Boneyard.
It has been one heck of a journey and wild ride, but you made it, congratulations! This is the final lesson of our advanced class. After you have read, studied and absorbed this lesson along with the fifteen others before it, you can now call yourself a rootworker. You now have all the foundational and advanced tools and know-how from which to develop your own Hoodoo practice.
