The Great Initiator: Death, Necromancy, and the Witch

Enrollment is Open!

Explore the witch’s relationship with death through traditional death customs, household shrines, communion with the beloved dead, divination, and familiar relationships.

In this twelve-week course, Lee Morgan guides students through death’s role in initiation and the practical foundations of necromantic work. Lessons move from death midwifery and hearthside offerings to apple, mirror, and bone divination, sensory spirit work, and relationships with the Mighty Dead.

Course Begins: Monday, 12th October

Instructor: Lee Morgan

What kind of relationship can a witch build with the dead?

The beloved dead.

The forgotten dead.

The Mighty Dead who appear in the stories of witches and their familiars.

To approach them is to encounter questions that reach into the heart of the Craft: how to make contact, how to recognize a beneficial relationship, and what the living and the dead might offer one another.

About The Great Initiator: Death, Necromancy, and the Witch

Make a place for the dead in your Craft

A photograph on the mantel. An object worn smooth by someone else’s hands. A place where a person’s story still seems close. The course begins with a question many practitioners return to: how do we move from remembrance toward a deliberate relationship with the dead?

Lee approaches that question through folklore, family traditions and sustained magical practice. The work takes you from the stillness of a vigil to the life of the hearth shrine, then into communion and the arts of divination. Along the way, familiar things acquire another significance: water, an apple, a mirror, the objects we inherit.

There is discernment to learn here, too. What makes a relationship worth cultivating? When should you step back? What distinguishes the beloved dead from the Mighty Dead, and what might a familiar offer beyond help with a single working?

If these questions have stayed at the edges of your practice, this is an opportunity to give them sustained attention, with Lee’s teaching and a community of fellow practitioners around the work.

What this work can bring to your practice

  • Give your work with the dead a foundation. Begin with Lee’s meditation on mortality and the body before moving into practices of vigil, communion and divination.
  • Build a household practice you can return to. Learn how offerings, memory and meaningful objects inform a shrine, and why Lee places such importance on the quality he calls Virtue.
  • Approach the beloved dead with greater discernment. Work with criteria for a beneficial relationship, including reciprocity, demands and the effects of the work on your life.
  • Bring more of your senses into spirit work. Lee’s practical teaching makes room for taste, touch, smell and hearing alongside sight, opening several ways to engage with the exercises.
  • Understand vigil as an act of relationship. Study traditional death customs and Lee’s adaptations for circumstances in which physical attendance is impossible.
  • Develop a clearer understanding of familiar relationships. Examine the place of wisdom and mutual nourishment in sustained work with the Mighty Dead.

You will leave with written teaching and practices to revisit as your understanding develops, along with ongoing access to the course materials.

Study with Lee Morgan

Lee Morgan is the author of A Deed Without a Name, Standing and Not Falling, and Sounds of Infinity. In The Great Initiator, he draws on traditional witchcraft, death customs and accounts from his own long-standing work with the dead.

His teaching connects the strange details of folklore with the questions that arise in practice. Why might a household shrine matter to necromancy? What does an offering establish? How do you judge the quality of a connection once you have begun to cultivate it?

During the cohort, Lee will participate in the private Facebook group, answer student questions through video and share additional teaching. Bring him the questions that emerge as you work through the lessons. That exchange is an important part of studying this course together.

Six Modules with time to work between them

A new core module opens every other week. The following week is for practice, reflection and questions, with selected supplemental audio available for further study.

This pace matters. A vigil unfolds over several nights. A shrine becomes part of your life through attention. A practice may raise its most useful question only after you have returned to it. The integration weeks give that process room, without another required module arriving immediately.

The written lessons and recordings can be studied around your schedule. You retain ongoing access to the course materials after the cohort, so you can keep returning to the work.

Your path through The Great Initiator

Course Curriculum:

Week 1 & 2: The Great Mystery

Begin where this work asks you to begin: with your own mortality. Lee introduces Death and Necessity, the relationship between death and initiation, and the return of the body to the wider living world. The foundational practical gives these ideas a place in your own meditation. In the following week, return to the work and bring your questions; The Recomposition of Decomposition offers an optional further exploration.

Week 3 & 4: Death Midwifery

What does it mean to keep someone company at the threshold of death? Through Welsh, Scottish and Breton material, alongside his own family traditions, Lee examines the communal work of vigil. The practical introduces a nine-night vigil and adaptations for working at a distance. The integration week allows the vigil to continue and gives you time to consider what it teaches about presence and release.

Week 5 & 6: Home and Hearthside

Look again at the house you live in. Its hearth, thresholds and treasured objects become the setting for a different understanding of life with the dead. This written module develops the practice of the shrine and the meaning of Virtue through offerings, memory and the stories objects carry. Use the following week to begin or deepen a household practice you can sustain.

Week 7 & 8: The Return of the Absent One

The ghosts of folklore return for many reasons. Which relationships should a witch cultivate? Lee introduces criteria for discernment before guiding a practical of communion with the beloved dead. The lesson makes room for connections beyond biological ancestry. Integration includes questions about the relationships you approach and optional listening on Pendulums with the Unsettled Dead.

Week 9 & 10: By Sheep Scapula and Apple Peel at Midnight

An apple, a mirror and a bone: ordinary materials at the center of an unusual divinatory practice. Bring together the earlier work with sensory attention, omen lore and the presence of the beloved dead. The original written lesson and video provide the core practical. Apple at the Mirror and Scapula Voices offer separate optional variations to consider during the integration week.

Week 11 & 12: The Familiar

What might grow from a relationship sustained over years? The final written module turns to the Mighty Dead, familiar relationships and the value of knowledge beyond an immediate magical result. Through folklore and accounts from his own practice, Lee considers wisdom, agency and mutual nourishment. Close with questions and a plan for the work you want to continue.
